In order to create, first you must destroy. Take the Big Bang, the meteor that took out the dinosaurs, the atom bomb, endless strife and wars, and so on. History is replete with examples of people starting over, with art and design taking center stage in keeping the  memory of the past alive or making a clean break with it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top:40px; margin-bottom:40px;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/logo-design?utm_source=10-artists-for-katrina-new-orleans&amp;utm_medium=topbutton&amp;utm_campaign=ctatracking\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cta-button\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Find A Perfect Logo Design Here<\/a><\/div>\n<p>10 years ago today, Hurricane Katrina rained death and destruction in New Orleans, one of America\u2019s most culturally-diverse cities. It took with it 2000 American lives, and damage worth $100 billion. But like a phoenix, the metaphorical significance of the city that\u2019s known widely as the collective subconscious of America\u2019 shouldn\u2019t be lost on anyone. And here we are 10 years after, a city that\u2019s bustling with activity, transforming that resilience of yesterday into an engine of creative expression and fertility. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/art-logos.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art<\/a> has always been a powerful indicator of symbolism, which is also true in a post-Katrina New Orleans that wants to move on to the future.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2022 Artists for Katrina<\/h2>\n<p>These 10 artists and creative professionals have interwoven the themes of tragedy and loss, of rebirth and renaissance, following some of history\u2019s horrific happenings be they man-made or due to nature\u2019s wrath:<\/p>\n<h3>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/mark-bradford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Mark Bradford<\/a> \u2013 A Modernist Abstract interpretation of a City in Ruins<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Bradford\" title=\"Mark Bradford\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4619\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford.jpg 928w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford-389x300.jpg 389w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Mark-Bradford-650x500.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mark Bradford has portrayed the aerial view of New Orleans in  a modernist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abstract<\/a> style by mixing up his artwork with segments of  billboards, flyers, and graffitied stencils. Many commentators attributed the slow pace of relief efforts to racial  prejudice. Nari Ward believes that art can heal such individuals by making an  emphatic engagement possible between with the affected neighborhoods and their residents. By using found objects and  materials across affected New Orleans neighborhoods and arranging them in unexpected  compositional arrangements, Ward\u2019s works are renowned for their symbolic as  well as narrative value in honoring the past and the future both.<\/p>\n<h3>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/keith-calhoun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Keith Calhoun<\/a> \u2013 Documentarian for the soul of the city<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun.jpg\" alt=\"Keith Calhoun\" title=\"Keith Calhoun\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4622\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun-335x220.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Keith-Calhoun-455x300.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Keith is a New Orleans native through and through, and one  the most valuable documentarians on the planet. Hurricane Katrina was a rather  personal tragedy for him as most of his works were swept away by the hurricane  and water. Not one to be deterred, Keith now uses his skills and talents to  capture the African American experience in New Orleans, making the most of his stark  black-and-white photography portraits.<\/p>\n<h3>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/chandra-mccormick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Chandra McCormick<\/a> \u2013 Visual Ethnography with a Pulse on  Public Consciousness<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chandra-McCormick.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chandra-McCormick.jpg\" alt=\"Chandra McCormick\" title=\"Chandra McCormick\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4623\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chandra-McCormick.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chandra-McCormick-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Chandra-McCormick-441x300.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Visual ethnographer par excellence and wife to Keith Calhoun,  Chandra has earned laurels for her photorealistic aspects in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/photography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photography<\/a>.  She is hard at work restoring the photo archives that were lost due to  Hurricane Katrina, giving her a chance to revisit and reframe the history of  the city with crisp results.<\/p>\n<h3>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/sandra-russell-clark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Sandra Russell Clark<\/a> \u2013 Mood-based Digital Photography<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Sandra-Russell-Clark.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Sandra-Russell-Clark.jpg\" alt=\"Sandra Russell Clark\" title=\"Sandra Russell Clark\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4624\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Sandra-Russell-Clark.jpg 963w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Sandra-Russell-Clark-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Sandra-Russell-Clark-313x300.jpg 313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sandra was one of the unlucky people whose homes were  destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She moved with her husband to Santa Fe for a couple  of years, only to return to her home city recently. And during this period, her  style of photography underwent a tectonic shift. Her photos convey mood,  emotions and serenity to reflect a world preserved in time. Her digital  photographs are pristinely framed and shot, signifying a rebirth of sorts.<\/p>\n<h3>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/evert-witte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Evert Witte<\/a> \u2013 Artful sophistication with Light and Color<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte.jpg\" alt=\"Evert Witte\" title=\"Evert Witte\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4625\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte.jpg 921w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte-299x300.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Evert-Witte-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 921px) 100vw, 921px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Dutch-based painter resided in New Orleans when Katrina  hit. Having relocated after that tragedy to Santa Fe, Witte began to  incorporate more light and colors in his paintings depicting irregular linear  forms produced by loose brushwork. His flair for abstract painting shows no  signs of being stuck in a rut.<\/p>\n<h3>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/tameka-norris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Tameki Norris<\/a> \u2013 Multi-faceted Performance Artist and Creator<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris.jpg\" alt=\"Tameki Norris\" title=\"Tameki Norris\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4626\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris-335x220.jpg 335w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Tameki-Norris-458x300.jpg 458w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a New Orleans native, Tameka Norris has dabbled into painting,  video, photography, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">music<\/a>, performance, and more to express her creative  leanings better. Post Katrina, Tameki collected objects from a New Orleans  neighborhood to create paintings as a living testament to the tragedy that  befell her city. She has applied these objects of destruction in other works<\/p>\n<h3>9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/krzysztof-wodiczko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Krzysztof Wodickzko<\/a> \u2013 Where the Homeless are given a voice<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Krzysztof-Wodickzko.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Krzysztof-Wodickzko.jpg\" alt=\"Krzysztof Wodickzko\" title=\"Krzysztof Wodickzko\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4627\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Krzysztof-Wodickzko.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Krzysztof-Wodickzko-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Krzysztof-Wodickzko-466x300.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though not strictly related to Katrina, the works of this  artist deserve a mention as it touches on the universal themes of loss and  upheaval. Krzysztof Wodickzko is a Polish born photographer who captures the  impact of war and violence in his snapshots so that people can \u2018speak about what\u2019s  unspeakable.\u2019 His works touch on themes of art, trauma and healing, with his  projects highlighting the homeless and sparking conversation about human rights  denied to them.<\/p>\n<h3>10. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artist\/graham-nash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Graham Nash<\/a> \u2013 Contemporary photography meets anti-war philosophy<\/h3>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Graham-Nash.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Graham-Nash.jpg\" alt=\"Graham Nash\" title=\"Graham Nash\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4628\" width=\"600\" height=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Graham-Nash.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Graham-Nash-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Graham-Nash-472x300.jpg 472w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another artists who\u2019s not from New Orleans but one whose  work deserves a mention here. Crosby, Stills, Nash &amp; Young is a musical  group to which Graham Nash also belongs. He was always fascinated with  photography from a young age, developing and collecting contemporary  photographs which later on became the subject of digital art <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/publishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">printing<\/a>. Though his shots generally veer towards his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designmantic.com\/industry\/band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">band<\/a> and music, he has been known to  espouse his anti-war message through the use of his photography.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They say out of destruction are born the most wondrous things.
