Professionals Don’t Use MS Word For Designing – Explained -

Microsoft Word is not a designing software but people from professional fields don’t tend to understand the difference between MS Word and Designing software programs. There are different yet definite reasons why professionals do not use MS Office for designing. This kind of practice differentiates a professional and mediocre designer.

What Word is for

Here are excerpts from 3 prominent professionals from design and business field, who are of the same view.

Microsoft Word is conveniently time-consuming and nothing else. It is better to get your creative designed through a designing software rather than opting for MS Office. Bevi Chagnon (Trainer for publishing, design, digital media, automated publishing workflows) says

“Word isn’t a page layout program, so it’s more difficult and time consuming to get graphics to ‘stay put’ on a page, wrap text around them, and control them. Graphics tend to ‘fly off’ to other pages (in the words of one of my clients) because you’ll place a graphic on page 3 today but when you open up the document tomorrow, it could be on page 4 or 5 or 19. Who knows! Even when you take pains to anchor graphics correctly, you get drastic reflow of graphics.”

Usually, professionals cannot think about Microsoft Word for designing purposes and the reason is very well expressed and explained by Matt Milgrom (Consultant at TenderSuccess based in Sydney, Australia‎) as

“Under the hood, however, MS Word remains a Word Processor with go-faster stripes, rather than a dedicated page layout tool. There are many reasons why the design and publishing industry doesn’t use it to produce annual reports and company magazines”

Josh Cutherell (Graphic Designer at Openbox9) also spots light on MS Word as

“Word is an excellent word processor and basic layout tool, it does fall short in a number of areas. If you want a professionally designed document that is graphically rich, or a unique layout with the possibilities of bleed or spreads, you’ll require more powerful software.”

The bottom line is, MS Word can be ultimate for content management and word processing but as far as designing and graphics are concerned it’s not the best option.

  1. Microsoft word is a writing platform where we can prepare and keep our important document. It is not a software through which we can design. so you should not use it for designing purpose.

  2. Microsoft Word is definitely not a designing software, there is a lot of difference in tools and categories between the MS Word and Designing Softwares.

  3. I personally use Microsoft office for many years and this is the best platform because it is easy to use and there are lots of features. I do not agree with the given statement.
